Financial authorities in Greece have ordered the freezing of the assets of European Parliament Vice-President Eva Kaili and several members of her family, in response to the investigation opened against her for an alleged bribery scheme linked to Qatar.
The anti-money laundering authority has also included Kaili’s partner, her parents and siblings among those affected, with the aim of freezing all assets – from accounts to property – to determine their provenance, according to ERT channel.
Kaili was charged for her alleged involvement in a corrupt network to promote Qatari interests in European politics. In total, six people have been arrested, including former Italian MEP Pier-Antonio Panzeri.
The European Parliament announced on Saturday the suspension of the Greek Socialist from all her competences and powers as vice-president of the European Parliament, although not from the office itself, given the «ongoing investigations being carried out by the Belgian authorities».
