Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE) on Wednesday opened an investigation against Brazil’s outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, for casting doubt on the election result and for allegedly abusing his power during the election campaign.

TSE judge Benedito Gonçalves, the court’s inspector general, has opened the case to analyze allegations presented by the coalition of president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as reported by G1 channel.

The legal team of the Workers’ Party (PT), Lula da Silva’s formation, argues that Bolsonaro and his allies attempted to discredit and destabilize the presidential elections, spreading false news and misinformation about the integrity of the voting system.

They have also argued that the outgoing president abused his political and economic power by increasing social benefits and making advance payments to lower-income Brazilians in an attempt to increase his chances of reelection.

«Those investigated made efforts to spread false news about the electronic voting system and attack the electoral and higher courts, with the clear objective of harming voters,» wields the TSE statement, which details that Bolsonaro has five days to present his defense.
