Indonesian authorities on Friday raised to more than 600 the death toll from the earthquake registered on November 21 on the island of Java, which had its epicenter in Cianjur, a significant increase over the 334 confirmed to date.

The head of the Cianjur district, Herman Suherman, has indicated that «the complete data of victims in thirteen sub-districts» point to 602 dead, whose identities «have been confirmed with name and address», according to the Indonesian state news agency, Antara.

It has detailed that 397 people died in the sub-district of Cugenang, while stressing that the earthquake also caused material damage to more than 37,000 homes, 525 educational centers, 269 places of worship, fourteen health centers and 17 office buildings.

The earthquake had its epicenter ten kilometers south of Cianjur, according to the Indonesian National Meteorological, Geophysical and Climatological Agency (BMKG), which ruled out the risk of a tsunami. For its part, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) confirmed that the earthquake had shaken the capital, Jakarta, with no casualties reported in the city.
