A two-year-old girl died Sunday after the boat in which she was crossing the Mediterranean Sea with 43 migrants sank off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa.
The mortal victim, who was traveling with her mother, had been intubated and transferred to a health center, where she finally died, according to the Italian news agency AdnKronos.
The Italian authorities found the survivors in the water after the boat they were on capsized. Some of the migrants had injuries from fuel burns and drowning syndrome.
Among the 43 migrants, originally from Ivory Coast, Guinea and Cameroon, rescued 10 miles off the coast of Lampedusa, after the sinking of their boat, there are also 9 women and 3 minors, reports the newspaper ‘La Repubblica’.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of Agriento, Sicilian city, has opened an investigation for crimes of complicity in illegal immigration and death as a consequence.
The mayor of Lampedusa, Filippo Mannino, has regretted the event, criticizing the attitude of European politicians towards this problem.
«The massacre continues and the victims are more and more children. It is heartbreaking (…) What worries me is, above all, that it seems to become normal. There is a deafening silence around these deaths, we must cry out,» Mannino told Adnkronos.
«I am concerned above all about the silence of Europe, I do not want to make it a political issue, but I know the hardships of those who live on this island and the pain of those who land there,» he added.
