A total of 31 people have been injured and nine have been arrested during the celebration of the victory of the Argentine national team in the Qatar 2022 World Cup in the city of Buenos Aires.
It is estimated that more than five million people gathered on 9 de Julio Avenue and the 25 de Mayo highway for the celebrations.
«On December 20, as a result of the operation carried out by the Emergency Medical Care System (SAME) in the center of the city of Buenos Aires and its surroundings, the medical team provided care to 31 people, according to the latest report delivered at 5 p.m.,» according to sources from the Ministry of Health reported in the Argentine newspaper ‘La Nación’.
Most of these people have been assisted for polytraumatisms due to falls and cutting wounds. «Of the total number of people, 16 required transfers to different hospitals in the city, mainly the Ramos Mejía, Rivadavia, Fernández and Argerich Hospitals», said the newspaper.
During the incidents, the supporters assaulted a Banco Galicia ATM located between Lavalle and Cerrito Streets after forcibly removing the metal shutter, an act that was recorded on television transmissions, as reported by ‘Clarín’.
The Albiceleste national team and the coaching staff began the celebration tour at midday (local time) in a caravan to share the title with the fans. Following the vehicle’s difficulties in moving forward, the players took a detour in Villa Lugano and were forced to continue their journey by helicopter.
In view of the incidents, the authorities had to clear the Plaza de la República, where the celebrations ended, as well as the occupants of the Obelisk. This was followed by several confrontations with stones thrown by the fans from behind improvised barricades. As reported by the last mentioned media, almost an hour after the incidents, the situation seems to be under control in the Republic Square while the Police continues to guard the area.
