The Secretariat of Human Rights (SDH) of Argentina has informed this Tuesday of the death of one of the founders of Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, Haydée Gastelú, who was part of the association for 25 years.
«The SDH regrets the death of the beloved Haydée Gastelú, one of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo who was present in that the first round of April 30, 1977,» the body said in a message on the social network Twitter.
The leader of the human rights organization was in the first round, when she sought to know the whereabouts of her son Horacio, who was kidnapped eight months before this round, and who was later known to have been murdered in the Fatima Massacre, according to Télam.
«Example of resistance, memory and unwavering struggle for Human Rights, after 25 years of searching, Haydeé managed to find the body of her son Horacio, murdered in the Fátima Massacre, and those responsible were prosecuted and imprisoned,» the Secretariat has highlighted.
The organization Madres de Plaza de Mayo Línea Fundadora, of which Haydeé was a member, also confirmed her death through its Facebook account, where it remembered her as a «firm and unceasing seeker of justice and truth».
«You are mother of Alicia, of Horacio, of Diego, wife of Coco: beautiful family. Horacio was taken from you by the last civil-military-church dictatorship and we lost him forever. Only his recovered remains gave you back some peace and even a bit of happiness,» they said.
«Serene and wise, your great heart made you the companion of so many mothers, and the mother of so many sisters of the disappeared,» they added.
On April 30, 1977, sixteen women marched, arm in arm, around the May Pyramid in protest against the uncertainty of the whereabouts of their disappeared children. Their weekly walks became a symbol of the struggle for Human Rights and against the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983).
