The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, has congratulated his compatriots on the holidays, affirming that «it is the first time» that there is «a Christmas with true peace», in a message with which he wanted to vindicate the reduction of the homicide rate in the Central American country.
Bukele, who has made the fight against insecurity one of the main axes of his government, said in a video shared on social networks that «peace is no longer a distant dream or an empty word» but «a reality». «We trust in God that this will be the first of many Christmases that our country will celebrate with security, freedom and peace,» he said, accompanied by his wife and daughter.
In recent days, the president has even claimed that El Salvador is «the safest country in Latin America», with almost daily messages on Twitter in which he boasts of an unprecedented reduction in the homicide rate and responds to criticism from human rights organizations for the alleged excesses of the authorities.
