The president of the lower house of the German Parliament (Bundestag), the Social Democrat Barbel Bas of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), has proposed extending the term of the legislature from four to five years, which would also mean postponing the holding of elections.
He believes that this extended legislature «would be good for the Bundestag,» which would thus adopt the times that already apply in most regional parliaments. «Perhaps one or two elections could be combined,» he explained in statements to the DPA agency.
The last legislative elections took place in September 2021 and from them emerged a new majority led by the SDP, which governs in coalition with Greens and Liberals.
On the other hand, Bas said it is «incomprehensible» that the minimum voting age of 16 is not applied at the federal level, although it is applied in many local and regional elections. In this sense, he pointed out that the early participation in this type of process favors that people will continue to vote in the future.
