U.S. President Joe Biden has called for national unity and denounced the polarization of U.S. politics in his Christmas speech on Friday.

«Our politics has become so angry, so petty, so partisan. And too often we see each other as enemies, not neighbors; as Democrats or Republicans, not compatriots. We are too divided,» the U.S. leader said in a message to all Americans.

Biden also expressed his hope that this Christmas season would serve «to drain the poison that has infected» the country’s politics and «has pitted us against each other» and to stop seeing each other as «members of ‘Team Red’ or ‘Team Blue'».

«I hope that this Christmas will mark a new beginning for our nation, because there is much that unites us as Americans, much more that unites us than divides us,» the president added.

In addition, the president wanted to allude to the ravages caused by the coronavirus pandemic: «The pandemic has taken so much from us. We have lost so much time among ourselves. We’ve lost so many people…. people we loved,» said Biden, also alluding to the «more than one million lives lost in America alone» due to COVID-19.

Finally, the president of the Executive launched a last message of empathy for these dates that can also be «a time of great pain and terrible loneliness». «It was 50 years ago this week that I lost my first wife and young daughter in a car accident, and my two sons were seriously injured, when they were shopping for a Christmas tree. I know how hard this time of year can be,» shared the president.
