The House of Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday approved the appointment of Borjana Kristo of the Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ) party as prime minister for the next four years, the first woman to hold the post.
The House of Representatives has given ‘green light’ to the appointment of the Croat with 23 votes in favor, including the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats party, and 15 against from the deputies of the Party of Democratic Action (SDA).
During his speech at the session, he said he was «aware» that Bosnia and Herzegovina is «a three-nation state», so a «political consensus» on every issue, including NATO membership, is necessary.
«Apart from the European one, the NATO path is also an important foreign policy priority for Bosnia and Herzegovina. NATO integration is not only a military but also a political alliance that shares the values of freedom, democracy, pluralism and consensus,» he stressed, as reported by the Oslobodenje news portal.
According to the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kristo, who served as president of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina between 2007 and 2001, will have to appoint her cabinet in the next 30 days, the news portal Dnevni Avaz reported.
Kristo’s party, HDZ, the Serb nationalist SNSD – led by Serb Milorad Dodik – and eight parties of social democratic, green or civil society orientation had previously agreed to form a coalition government.
