Nassau County Superior U.S. Attorney Anne Donnelly announced Wednesday that she will open an investigation against Republican Congressman George Santos for falsifying information on his résumé about his previous job and university studies.
«The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies related to Congressman-elect (George) Santos are nothing short of astounding,» Donnelly said in a statement, stressing that the residents of Nassau County — for which Congressman Santos was elected on Nov. 8 — should have «an honest and responsible representative,» according to ‘The Hill’.
The investigation will take place after George Santos admitted Monday to making up details about his education and previous job while campaigning for the midterm congressional elections.
This is what he said during an interview with ‘New York Post’ after ‘The New York Times’ revealed that the member of the House of Representatives had lied on his resume and that he had not obtained the college degrees he claimed to have.
In addition to not telling the truth about his education, Santos claimed that he had worked at Goldman Sachs and Citigroup consulting firms and that he had graduated from New York University, which was not true.
He also made claims about his family history that could not be proven, such as that his mother’s parents were Ukrainian Jews who fled the Nazi holocaust to Brazil. However, records obtained by ‘The New York Times’ showed that his mother’s parents were born in Brazil and had no Ukrainian or Jewish ancestors.
Following his confession, the Democratic Party has called for his resignation, claiming that he has let voters down. In addition, they have warned the Republicans that if Santos does not resign the seat, the Republican Party should call for a vote to expel him.
