The President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has denounced that the main promoters of the social protests in the streets of Peru in recent weeks, which will resume after the Christmas holidays, are nothing more than a «pretext» to «cause chaos» in the country.
Thus, in the framework of her visit to Cusco, the president regretted that the main unions and organizations of up to seven regions of southern Peru have confirmed that next Wednesday they will resume the protests, according to the newspaper ‘La República’.
Among their main demands are both the closure of the Congress of the Republic and the early elections, as well as the release of the former president of the country, Pedro Castillo, arrested after announcing in early December the dissolution of Parliament and decreeing a government of exception.
After this maneuver, which received hardly any support, Boluarte, until then his ‘number two’, took the reins of the Head of State. This succession of events brought Castillo’s supporters to the streets, protests in which almost 30 people have already been confirmed dead and which are experiencing a sort of truce for Christmas.
In the context of these protests and the deaths, Boluarte announced that he would travel to those areas where the demonstrations have had more relevance to meet with the promoters of the protests and with the main social leaders.
