A Burmese court on Friday sentenced the country’s former ‘de facto’ leader Aung San Suu Kyi to seven years in prison in a case against her on five counts of corruption during her time in government.
This latest sentence, from a military court, brings Suu Kyi’s total jail time to 33 years, extinguishing any chance of her returning to politics as long as the military junta remains in power, Bloomberg has reported.
The hearing has found that the leader failed to follow financial regulations in the lease and purchase of a helicopter between 2019 and 2021, according to a person familiar with the case, who requested anonymity because the sentence has not been made public.
The United Nations Security Council last week passed for the first time a resolution calling for an end to the violence in Burma and urging the military junta to take «immediate steps» toward compliance with the ‘road map’ outlined by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The resolution, promoted by the British mission to the United Nations, calls for the release of all political prisoners, including the country’s former ‘de facto’ leader Aung San Suu Kyi and former president Win Myint, detained after the February 1 coup d’état.
