The Government of Ecuador announced Thursday afternoon an agreement with the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities (AME) to promote the creation of citizen security councils in an attempt to reduce violence in the country.
«Franklin Galarza (AME president) has pointed out the importance of promoting the creation, conformation and operation of Municipal Citizen Security Councils. In addition, to formulate and execute programs, plans and local actions on security, internal protection and public order,» reads a statement from the association on the social network Twitter.
In this sense, Galarza has called on Ecuador’s security services to work together in the implementation of a video surveillance system.
«We will work closely with the National Government for a common fight. The union of wills will give the results that citizens expect,» the letter continues.
For his part, the Vice Minister of the Interior, Freddy Ramos, mentioned the need to establish the «most appropriate mechanism for the Ecuadorian Police to have the support during the delivery of goods, to strengthen its logistical means in the territory.
«No square meter of the country can be left without the right to security. Nor can we exclude any part or population. That collaboration must also exist on the part of the population», the Vice Minister asserted, assuring that 2023 will be «the year of security».
The signing of the agreement comes at a time when the country is facing a multitude of conflictive episodes throughout the territory, with more than 3,500 violent deaths in the first 10 months of 2022.
