U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday proclaimed January 2023 as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, calling on U.S. society to know «the vital role» it can play «in the fight.»

«I call on businesses, civil society organizations, faith communities, families and all Americans to recognize the vital role we play in the fight against human trafficking and observe this month with appropriate programs and activities aimed at preventing all forms of human trafficking,» Biden said in a statement released by the White House.

The president justified the measure on the grounds that human trafficking has stripped nearly 25 million people of «their safety, dignity, and freedom, disproportionately affecting historically underserved and marginalized communities.»

«During National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we reaffirm our commitment to end this inhumane and immoral practice in all its forms. And as we bring perpetrators to justice, we renew our commitment to help survivors recover and rebuild their lives,» the U.S. President reiterated.

In this context, and because human trafficking «is a challenge that transcends borders,» the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development have partnered with partners around the world to detect human trafficking, connect victims to support services, and strengthen accountability.

«We all have an important role to play in preventing human tracing and protecting victims. This month, I encourage Americans to learn more about the signs of human trafficking and share the National Human Trafficking Hotline (…) Together, we can combat human trafficking and its cruel consequences,» added Biden.
