The U.S. Justice has sentenced this Wednesday the former Minister of Government of Bolivia Arturo Murillo to seven years in prison for corruption and money laundering, as confirmed by the Bolivian Attorney General, Wilfredo Chavez, on his official Twitter profile.
The Minister of Government, Eduardo Del Castillo, has also reacted to the sentence. «Proving once again, that the allegations we made as National Government were true,» he has said on Twitter, adding that «the coup d’état was not only to seize power and murder our people», but also «to loot and steal» from the State.
Murillo pleaded guilty at a December 8 hearing into the alleged cost-overrun purchase of riot gear used to suppress protests during the 2019 political crisis.
Bolivia has demanded the extradition of Murillo, who was arrested in May in the United States. According to data handled by the Bolivian government, the purchase of the materials in question had a cost of 5.6 million dollars (about 4.6 million euros), although the real price would amount to 3.3 million (almost 2.7 million euros).
