At least two police officers have been killed and 18 people injured in several clashes taking place in the Mexican state of Sinaloa, after Mexican authorities arrested Ovidio Guzmán, alias ‘El Ratón’, son of the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, drug trafficker Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán.
The governor of Sinaloa, Rubén Rocha Moya, has reported the death toll, noting that it is «very likely» that among the injured are people who make up organized crime groups.
Likewise, Rocha has asked citizens not to go out on the streets to protect themselves «from armed people», while announcing the suspension of classes and administrative work by the federal government, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Sol de Sinaloa’.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has reported that an operation is being carried out against organized crime in Culiacan, Sinaloa’s most populated city. However, he has not provided further details, stating that he is unaware of the facts, and has urged to wait for official information from local authorities.
For its part, the airline Aeromexico has temporarily cancelled air operations in Ciudad Obregon, in the state of Sonora, in the northwest of the country, after initially announcing that it was suspending flights only on Thursday.
The Federal Civil Aviation Agency confirmed that two aircraft had been hit by bullets, one belonging to the aforementioned company, Aeronméxico, and another air vehicle belonging to Fuerza Aérea Mexicana. As a result, several airports – Culiacán, Mazatlán and Los Mochis – are under the control of federal authorities.
