The United States has offered a reward of nearly 10 million euros for any information leading to the capture of jihadist leader Malim Ayman, accused of organizing an attack in 2020 against a military base in Kenya that cost the lives of three American citizens.
Ayman, also known as Dobow Abdiaziz Ali, is considered the leader of the Jaish Ayman terrorist organization, broadly the Kenyan «affiliate» of the Somali jihadist group Al Shabaab.
The United States specifically holds Ayman responsible for planning the attack on Manda Bay Air Base on January 5, 2020, which killed a US specialist and two US contractors, and injured two other US citizens, including two military personnel, as specified in the reward posted by the State Department.
Jaish Ayman is considered one of the most dangerous terrorist groups in Kenya. For example, one of the organization’s leaders, Abdilatif Abubakar Ali, is considered to be responsible for the planning and execution of one of the worst terrorist attacks in Kenya’s recent history, the 2013 attack on the Westgate shopping mall, which left 67 people dead.
The group, according to the Jamestown Institute think tank, is based on the country’s coast, specifically in Boni Forest and Lamu County, where they have been held responsible for the massacre of more than a hundred residents in 2014.
