The European Union has summoned Iran’s ambassador to the EU institutions, Hosein Dehghani, on Monday to condemn the two new executions of demonstrators carried out in Iran last weekend.
In a meeting on Monday in Brussels, the Secretary General of the EU External Action Service (EEAS), Stefano Sannino, summoned Dehghani to whom he expressed the EU’s «strong horror» at the application of the death penalty against two Iranian demonstrators in connection with the multiple national protests against the death in custody of the young Mahsa Amini, European diplomacy reported in a statement.
Both were convicted in the death of a security guard during pro-democracy demonstrations in Iran. These executions took place over the weekend and come on top of new death sentences on Monday against four people in connection with the protests.
In this regard, Sannino has called on the Iranian authorities to «immediately cease» the practice of imposing capital punishment against protesters and to halt the application of the sentences, guaranteeing due process to all those arrested in the framework of the protests in the country.
The EU has reiterated its firm opposition to capital punishment in all situations and circumstances and has emphasized that human rights are at the heart of EU relations, warning that its member states remain «united» in responding to Tehran’s actions in the face of citizen demonstrations.
This move comes on the same day that the governments of France and Germany have summoned Iranian diplomats to protest the new death sentences against four prisoners accused of killing several police officers.
