The spokeswoman for the UN Human Rights Office, Marta Hurtado, expressed concern on Tuesday about the violence during the protests in Peru, which have resulted in 40 deaths and 518 injured since December 7.
«We urge the authorities to carry out immediate, impartial and effective investigations into the deaths and injuries, hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure that victims have access to justice and reparations,» she said in a statement.
Hurtado also called on protesters to exercise restraint while exercising their fundamental right to peaceful assembly and called on security forces to comply with human rights standards on the use of excessive force.
«We note that the Government has sent a high-level mission to Puno and convened a national dialogue platform. It is essential that any negotiations be meaningful, with the participation of all stakeholders,» he concluded.
According to the balance, at least 17 people were killed, including a minor, and dozens injured on Monday in southeastern Peru, in the region of Puno, while a policeman died on Tuesday when his vehicle caught fire.
Of the total number of deaths on Monday, at least nine people died of gunshot wounds. In recent days, thousands of protesters have clashed with Peruvian police at the Juliaca airport.
