Na Kyung Won, vice chairwoman of a South Korean presidential committee and a member of the Korean People’s Power Party (PPP), the formation of current Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, resigned Tuesday after several criticisms against her.
Na, a former Seoul mayoral candidate, has resigned from her post as vice chairwoman of the Presidential Committee on Population Policy and Aging Society after the presidential office criticized her for unilaterally making decisions on the budget aimed at curbing the country’s low birth rates.
However, a senior official has told Yonhap news agency that Yoon has not heard of the resignation, prompting speculation that the president may be against Na in light of the possibility of her taking over the PPP leadership.
LEE CRITICIZES TRIAL AGAINST HIM Amid these tensions within the ruling party, opposition leader Lee Jae Myung of the Democratic Party (DP) on Tuesday criticized the trial against him in the framework of an urban corruption scandal.
Lee said during a session at the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office that the prosecution is «politically motivated» against him, claiming that he is a victim in the judicial process, so he will confidently oppose» the investigation, as reported by ‘The Korea Times’.
Lee is being investigated for allegedly receiving 847 million won (about 600,400 euros) in opaque funds from the real estate sector, a case in which Yoo Dong-gyu, former interim president of Seongnam Development Corporation, and Kim Yong, his right-hand man, are also implicated.
The South Korean judiciary is investigating whether the money was used to finance Lee’s presidential campaign in the opposition party’s November elections, in which he competed against his rival, Yoon Seok Youl, the current president of Korea.
