Peru’s Prime Minister Alberto Otarola announced Tuesday a three-day curfew in the department of Puno, where 18 people have died in the last 24 hours as a result of clashes between demonstrators and security forces in anti-government protests.
The mandatory social immobilization will take place from 8:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. and will come into effect soon, although it has not transcended so far what day specifically, reported ‘La Republica’.
The decree obliges the citizens of Puno to remain in their homes during the hours established by the central government, also restricting the operation of some businesses.
Likewise, the Peruvian Executive has declared a national mourning to be applied this Wednesday, January 11, in commemoration of the victims of the protests.
«Today a supreme decree has been approved in the Council of Ministers declaring the mandatory social immobilization in Puno for a period of three days from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m.», mentioned the Peruvian ‘premier’, according to the aforementioned newspaper.
In this sense, Otárola has regretted the death of patrolman José Luis Soncco Quispe, who lost his life when he was burned alive in his car. «I deplore this aggression against the forces of law and order,» he said.
The Peruvian Prime Minister announced these new measures during his presentation to the Andean Congress. The Prime Minister attended with his cabinet to explain the policies of the Boluarte government and to seek a vote of confidence.
During the last 24 hours, 18 people have died during protests calling for the resignation of Dina Boluarte’s government and the calling of presidential elections.
With the latest deaths, at least 45 people have lost their lives since the outbreak of the mobilizations for the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo, who was removed by the Congress after trying to arrogate more powers to himself with a view to form a government of exception.
