The Spanish government advises against travel to Peru «except for reasons of extreme necessity», due to the protests that have been going on since December and have already resulted in more than 40 deaths, most of them demonstrators against the current president, Dina Boluarte.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes in its travel recommendations that the «intensity» of the demonstrations has decreased, but also that these protests have, «in some cases», a «violent» character. In addition, there is a curfew in some areas as a result of the state of emergency decreed almost a month ago.
In terms of transportation and mobility, the department headed by Juan Manuel Albares warns of road blockades that «seriously compromise» travel in the interior of the country, while «it is not ruled out» that there may be new airport closures.
For all these reasons, he recommends «postponing» the planned trips to the Andean country, in a tightening of the alert that comes in a week in which more than a dozen people have died in new violent incidents in the south of Peru.
«It is recommended that Spanish residents and passers-by in Peru remain attentive to the evolution of the situation through the announcements of authorities and local media, follow the recommendations of local authorities, avoid approaching areas where concentrations or demonstrations are taking place and take extreme precautions during their travels outside the hotel or accommodation where they are,» reads the notice.
