The leader of the Santa Cruz Civic Committee, Rómulo Calvo, has announced that the «civics» have decided to lift the road blockade in the region, although they have called for a mass meeting for January 25 in at least nine Bolivian cities.
«(We declare) to call for a great national cabildo to be held simultaneously and coordinated in all the capital cities of the nine departments of Bolivia this January 25, 2023,» he has specified in a document signed by the Committee, as reported by the newspaper ‘El Deber’.
In this sense, the massive demonstrations seek «to achieve the restoration of the rule of law, the recovery of our democracy, the freedom of all political prisoners and the radical change of the corrupt justice system».
Road blockades and demonstrations have been repeated in Bolivia in recent weeks after the governor of Santa Cruz, Luis Fernando Camacho, was arrested and imprisoned for his role in the violent demonstrations of 2019 that ended with the departure of then president Evo Morales from the country.
Camacho is the governor of Bolivia’s richest region and historically opposed to the governments of the ruling Movement Towards Socialism (MAS), the scene in the last month of new protests and blockades, this time to oppose the population census law.
