The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Tuesday urged the European Union to do more to support Ukraine in the face of the situation it is going through in the context of Russian aggression, with the intensification of fighting in the east of the country, insisting that the European bloc will be «looking the other way» if it does not heed Kiev’s requests for military assistance.
In the midst of the debate on the transfer of tanks to Ukraine, the president of the European Parliament has expressed herself in favor of increasing military aid to Ukraine, at a key moment for the future of the war. «What more can we do? We can do much, much more. Let’s continue to find a political way to do it,» she said at a press conference with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
In this sense, he pointed out Europe’s unprecedented support to Ukraine with military, logistical and technological assistance to face the Russian invasion, but concluded that in the war context posed by Moscow this is not enough and urged the EU to «respond proportionally to the escalation».
«If in the end we fail to supply the demands of what Ukraine is asking for to defend the freedoms we take for granted, then we will have looked the other way,» Metsola summed up.
These statements come as the international debate centers on the idea of sending tanks to Ukraine, which Kiev is demanding to continue the fighting against Russia in the Donbas region. Germany, manufacturer of the ‘Leopard’ battle tanks, has to authorize the shipment to a third country, a matter that has generated internal tensions in the country on the convenience of taking the step and also with European partners such as Poland, which demand decisive actions from Berlin to stop the Russian troops.
