UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has acknowledged the need to implement «real change» in the British police force after Constable David Carrick admitted the day before to committing up to 49 sexual offenses continuously during 18 years of service.
Sunak has addressed this issue during the beginning of a meeting with his cabinet on Tuesday, and has recognized that cases like Carrick’s only undermine the confidence of the British population in the police, an aspect that he considers fundamental for the good work of the security authorities.
In this line, the British premier has stressed that now the police must «address the failures that occurred in this case», while trying to «restore public confidence and do everything possible to ensure that women and girls are safe in their communities and homes».
He also pointed out that the Home Office has invested up to 3,000 million pounds — around 3,390 million euros — to «improve the processes» of recruitment in the London Metropolitan Police, the branch for which Carrick worked, according to Sky News.
Later, the Home Secretary herself, Suella Braverman, appeared before the House of Commons, where she acknowledged that Monday was «a dark day for the British Police and the Metropolitan Police».
Thus, Braverman showed her support for the victims and thanked them for the courage shown in facilitating the investigation against Carrick, while at the same time valuing the moral integrity of the «thousands of decent and hard-working police officers» who make up the force.
Carrick, a London Metropolitan Police officer, pleaded guilty on Monday to nearly 50 sex crimes, making him one of the most dangerous serial rapists in UK criminal history.
The British Prime Minister’s office had already described Carrick’s crimes as «appalling» and urged the security forces to root out «criminal» police officers in order to «restore the trust» of the British people, which «has been shattered».
According to testimony heard during the trial, the 48-year-old man met some of his victims through Internet dating apps, and used his position as a police officer to gain their trust. Carrick admitted to raping nine women, some on multiple occasions, over months or years.
London Metropolitan Police issued a statement Monday detailing that Carrick had been remanded in custody and will stand trial at a hearing scheduled in Southwark beginning Monday, February 6….
Carrick joined the Metropolitan Police in 2001 and worked in the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection command until his arrest and suspension in October 2021 by Hertfordshire Constabulary after being charged with rape.
