French nun Lucile Randon, known as Sister André and recognized as the world’s longest-lived person, has died at the age of 118 in the southern French city of Toulon.
The mayor of the city, Hubert Falco, confirmed the death on Tuesday, recalling that she would have turned a year older in less than a month, on February 11.
«It is with immense sadness and enormous emotions that I have just learned of the death of Sister André,» Falco indicated through a publication dedicated to the nun on her profile on the social network Facebook.
«She was the doyenne of humanity and thanks to her remarkable age she conquered the hearts of all French people. But beyond the symbol she represented for having crossed the century and experienced two world wars, Sister Andre was above all a deeply good and loving woman,» he has sentenced.
Andre, who was born in the south of France in 1904, was included in April 2022 in the list of oldest living persons and, according to Guinness World Records, is the second oldest French and European person ever recorded, according to the dpa agency.
With her death, Maria Branyas Morera, who lives in Spain, assumes the title of the world’s oldest person at the age of 115.
