The Colombian authorities have launched this Thursday the extradition operation to the United States of Alvaro Cordoba, brother of the senator of the Historical Pact Piedad Cordoba and whom the U.S. Justice accuses of drug trafficking crimes.
Álvaro Córdoba was captured at the beginning of February 2022 in the Colombian city of Medellín for his alleged responsibility in the shipment of large quantities of narcotics to the United States, according to RCN Radio.
The Colombian government had already signed Córdoba’s extradition request at the end of November after the defendant’s defense managed to delay the decision, which in September had been ratified by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.
According to the Colombian media, a US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) plane will transport Córdoba, along with five other defendants accused of different crimes, to the United States.
After his capture in Medellín, his sister, Senator Piedad Córdoba, denounced that this was a «persecution» against her and her family for her return to politics. «The evidence supporting this new judicial set-up must be shown,» she wrote on her social networks.
However, she is being prosecuted by the U.S. justice system for several crimes, including criminal association, possession and trafficking of firearms and explosives. According to the investigation, Córdoba is allegedly part of a criminal organization with ramifications in countries such as Venezuela and Mexico.
