The European Parliament on Thursday called on the European Union to toughen its position on Iran and increase sanctions against those responsible for the domestic crackdown on demonstrations, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and President Ebrahim Raisi.
In a resolution adopted Thursday, the European Parliament said that all those responsible for human rights violations in Iran should be sanctioned by the EU and called for the Revolutionary Guard to be added to the list of terrorist groups.
In this sense, they ask to increase the European ‘black list’ to all persons and entities responsible for violence against pro-democratic demonstrations and that the EU take the step of sanctioning the main political figures of the country as Khamenei and Raisi, apart from the Attorney General Mohamed Jafar Montazeri and the foundations related to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
For the parliamentarians, the spiral of violence unleashed by the Iranian regime and its military assistance to Russia in the midst of the war of aggression against Ukraine should harden the EU’s position towards Tehran.
This situation «calls for further adjustments in the EU’s position towards Iran, says the resolution approved Thursday by the European Parliament in a show of hands.
