EU sees situation in Venezuela as «totally different» and aims to change its position

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro – PRESIDENCIA DE VENEZUELA

The European Union considers that the political situation in Venezuela is «totally different» with important changes in recent months in the national sphere, with the dismissal of the president ‘in charge’ Juan Guaidó, and regional with the restoration of relations with Colombia and Brazil, and that is why it aspires to change its position towards Caracas.

This has been pointed out by a senior EU official before the meeting of foreign ministers of the bloc next Monday in which the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, will put on the table the situation in Venezuela and his intention to adapt European policy to the new reality of the South American country.

«The situation is totally different, I don’t know if the EU is going to adapt its policy, but there will be a reflection of the High Representative about it, what do you do when circumstances change?», has exposed the high official.

Diplomatic sources explain that among the tools that the EU handles is to revive the Contact Group with Venezuela to resume relations with Caracas and try to influence a democratic solution to the crisis.

MADURO’S REGIME, LESS ISOLATED The analysis of European diplomacy stresses that in the last six months there have been significant changes such as the restoration of relations with Colombia and Brazil after the arrival of the progressive governments of Gustavo Petro and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. «Nicolás Maduro’s regime is less isolated than it was a few years ago», concludes the senior European official.

Added to this are the internal changes in the Venezuelan opposition, with the dismissal of Juan Guaidó as ‘in charge’ president and the new phase of reorganization of the opposition to Maduro. The diplomatic movements of the United States or Spain and Portugal, which have reinstated their ambassadors in Caracas, also weigh in.

In this same context, the EU is closely watching the progress of the talks in Mexico between Government and opposition and Borrell himself hinted that if progress is made in the dialogue on the holding of democratic, free and fair elections in Venezuela, steps could be taken to ease sanctions.

«We are willing to review the sanctions imposed on the government of Nicolás Maduro if progress is made in the dialogue,» said the head of EU diplomacy in December. European sources stressed at the time that the sanctions were imposed because of the deterioration of democracy in the country and are «reversible or can be increased depending on the evolution of the situation».
