Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced Friday a slight reshuffle with changes in three ministries and the appointment of the new governor of the National Bank, a post to be filled by Mamo Mihretu, who worked in the past for the World Bank.
Abiy’s office has indicated in a statement on its Facebook social network account that Mamo will replace Yinager Dessiem who was at the helm of the National Bank of Ethiopia since 2018. The decision comes amid high inflation in the country amid efforts to consolidate peace after two years of conflict in Tigray.
He has also indicated that Alemu Sume will be Minister of Transport and Logistics, while Habtamu Tegegn will head the Mines portfolio and Gima Amente will be at the helm of Agriculture. Alemtsehay Paulos will head the Ethiopian Prime Minister’s Office.
They are joined by Daniel Kibret as Abiy’s advisor for Social Affairs, Taye Atske Selassie as advisor to the prime minister for Foreign Affairs and Melese Alemu as coordinator for Democratic Construction, a position he will hold at ministerial level, according to the communiqué.
These appointments come on the heels of the surprise resignation of Supreme Court Chief Justice Meaza Ashenafi and the body’s vice president, Solomon Areda. Meaza has been replaced by Tedros Minhret, while Abeba Embiale was appointed vice president of the court.
