The Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco has announced the suspension of tourist visits to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu due to political instability linked to protests against President Dina Boluarte.
The measure seeks to preserve the historical heritage, since the district began an indefinite strike this Saturday, January 21. Those who have already purchased tickets will be able to use them until one month after the end of the protests and there will be facilities for the refund of the amount already paid.
The Front for the Defense of the Interests of Machu Picchu, organizer of the indefinite strike, has announced the closure of all commercial establishments in the area to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and has set up a common pot for the entire district to deal with food shortages.
In recent days there have been violent clashes in the district of Ollantaytambo, where the train station leading to Machu Picchu is located.
More than 2,000 tourists used to visit Machu Picchu every day before the protests, while the number is now down to about 500, causing enormous damage to the region’s economy.
