Malawi’s Ministry of Health confirmed Saturday that it has exhausted the nearly three million vaccines used to combat the cholera outbreak declared in March last year, which has already left a total of 881 people dead in the country.
While awaiting the arrival of a new shipment of vaccines from the United Nations, the Ministry’s spokesman, Adrian Chikumbe, called on the population to strictly comply with hygiene standards.
«It is true that we no longer have vaccines. We have used up the ones we had,» he said in an appearance reported by the portal Nyasa Times.
In the midst of this situation, the United Nations Regional Director for Emergencies, Abdou Salam Gueye, is visiting the country to «better understand the situation of the outbreak and provide guidance on the overall response of the World Health Organization,» he said on his Twitter account.
