The Spanish Jesuit priest Xavier Albó Corrons died Friday at the age of 88 after several days in a medical center in the city of Cochabamba, in central Bolivia, with a delicate health condition.
«The Society of Jesus in Bolivia wishes to communicate that Xavier Albó has indeed departed to the house of God and receives from him a loving embrace. We give thanks for the life shared with our companion,» the ecclesiastical organization said in a statement on the social network Facebook.
Albó, born in the Barcelona municipality of La Garriga, was transferred on Tuesday to the Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza residence, where he spent his last days, according to the Bolivian Information Agency (ABI).
The Jesuit priest arrived in Bolivia in 1952, at the age of 17, participating in the struggle for social demands during the dictatorship. He also participated in a strike with Luis Espinal and Domitila Barrios Chungara, which ended the government of Hugo Banzer and the call for elections in 1978.
Albó was a linguist, researcher and anthropologist, specializing in the study of indigenous peoples and rural populations and produced a series of studies and works in the country.
