Memphis Police announced Saturday the «permanent deactivation» of the Street Crimes Operations to Restore Peace in Our Neighborhoods (SCORPION) unit, five of whose officers are implicated in the death of Tyre Nichols.
«After listening carefully to the family of Tyer Nichols, community leaders and uninvolved officers who have done good work, it is in everyone’s best interest to permanently deactivate the SCORPION Unit,» the Memphis Police Department released in an official statement.
The text explains that the officers assigned to this unit have accepted the decision. «The hateful acts of a few dishonorably cloud the SCORPION name. It is imperative that we as the Memphis Police Department take proactive steps in the healing process for all those affected,» it added.
Thus, the Department is committed to «serving our community» and «taking all possible steps to rebuild the trust that has been negatively impacted by the death of Mr. Tyre Nichols.»
Nichols’ death as a result of his arrest following a traffic violation has sparked a new wave of protests against police violence across the United States, especially after the release of the video of the arrest in which the officers involved can be seen brutally beating Nichols.
