The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that it will end the immigration restrictions on the country’s southern border imposed by his predecessor in office, Donald Trump, once the health emergency imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus expires, something that is scheduled to happen next May.

«At the expense of no relevant event, the end of the health emergency will allow for an end to Title 42 immigration policy. The Administration has recently announced its intention to adopt new policies on the border situation once this is terminated,» said Elizabeth Prelogar, a senior Justice Department official.

This Title 42, which has been called for on numerous occasions by Republicans, allows the Administration to deny the opportunity to apply for asylum to migrants on health grounds.

This measure was introduced during the coronavirus pandemic and has been the subject of numerous criticisms and legal appeals in an attempt to have it withdrawn, according to information from the CNN television network.

Last year, some 15 Republican-majority states asked the U.S. judiciary to uphold the Trump-era Title 42. The Supreme Court agreed to keep it in place temporarily.

However, the government has now anticipated its end in view of May 11, when the health emergency will expire. The Biden Administration announced in April that it would end this controversial measure because it considered it was no longer necessary.

Since then, a number of governors have tried to fight to keep it in place despite criticism from human rights advocates.
