Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Cármen Lúcia Antunes sent this Friday in first instance to the Federal District Court six petitions to investigate former president Jair Bolsonaro for his attacks on the court and judges, among them the threats he made during independence celebrations in 2021.
The judge has pointed out that once Bolsonaro has ceased to be president of Brazil, he no longer has the immunity granted by the office, so she has requested that she set in motion the investigations already demanded by several congressmen of the then opposition.
In that sense, they denounced that those statements made by Bolsonaro on the 7th of 2021 «amplified and reverberated the anti-democratic and coup rhetoric», warnings that take on special relevance after the January 8th attacks on institutions by a disgruntled mob of Bolsonaristas.
Bolsonaro accumulates investigations within the Supreme Court, where he has five other open cases for the fake news case, in the hands of Judge Alexandre de Moraes. The dissemination of erroneous information about the electoral system is in the spotlight for his possible responsibility in the January 8 attacks.
