The U.S. Department of Justice has re-subpoenaed former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence to request his testimony in the criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s role during the January 6, 2021, assault on Capitol Hill.

The special prosecutor overseeing the investigations into Trump, Jack Smith, has asked Pence for documents and testimony related to the failed attempt by Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election, a source familiar with the matter told ABC News.

The subpoena comes after months of negotiations between the Justice Department and the former US vice president, who has so far refused to attend any subpoena, although he is of great interest from the judicial authorities, since he is the only witness to the conversations he had with Trump before the assault.

For this reason, prosecutors are trying to obtain Pence’s version of events, even under oath, according to ‘The Washington Post’.

This is not the first time the Justice Department has subpoenaed Pence. In November, the judicial body of the US government called the former vice president to come to give his testimony, although he finally refused.

The former vice president previously claimed that Trump reproached him for his opposition to a plan to cast doubt on the results of the 2020 elections and shouted at them that he would be remembered as «a coward,» according to an excerpt from a book published months ago.
