At least five Mozambican military personnel have been killed in an attack carried out in the last hours by suspected jihadists against an Army base in Montepuez district, in Cabo Delgado province (north).
Sources of the administrative post of Nairoto have detailed this Tuesday to the Mozambican news portal Carta de Mozambique that the attack was perpetrated during the early hours of Monday morning and has pointed out that part of the population has fled the place for fear of reprisals.
He also pointed out that the attackers set fire to four vehicles during the attack, the second in Montepuez in the last week, with no group claiming responsibility for the time being.
The Mozambican Minister of Defense, Cristovao Chume, assured in November 2022 that the jihadist groups «do not have permanent bases» in the province of Cabo Delgado, before indicating that the jihadists are divided into small groups which have lost their positions because of the operations of the security forces.
Cabo Delgado has been the scene since October 2017 of attacks carried out by Islamist militiamen known as Al Shabaab, unrelated to the homonymous group operating in Somalia, which maintains ties with Al Qaeda. Since mid-2019 they have been mostly claimed by ISCA, which has stepped up its actions since March 2020.
