The leader of the Peruvian political party Fuerza Popular, Keiko Fujimori, promised this Wednesday that she will not be a presidential candidate in the event of an early election, after meeting with the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, to ask for an early election.
«If there is an advance of elections, I will not be a presidential candidate», said Fujimori in declarations to the press after meeting with the Peruvian president, who has begun a round of consultations with all the leaders in the midst of the political crisis facing the country, as reported by RPP.
According to the leader of the conservative Popular Force, the «fastest way» to find a solution to the situation Peru is going through is to bring forward the elections to 2023, as the pro-Fujimori party has proposed to the Peruvian Congress.
However, he regretted that several benches have rejected his proposal in the Andean Parliament. «A strange coincidence has been seen between the extremes such as the right and left that unfortunately boycotted the exit, making excuses such as the Constituent Assembly or putting pretexts wanting alleged reforms,» he said.
During the several votes held in the Congress on the possible advance of the elections, the benches of the left stressed the importance that an electoral call be accompanied by a referendum to decide on the remodeling of the State through a Constituent Assembly that would draft a new Magna Carta, appealing to the blockade that the Congress exercised during the mandate of former President Pedro Castillo.
URGES GUSTAVO PERO NOT TO «MEDDLE IN INTERNAL ISSUES».
On the other hand, Fujimori has criticized Colombian President Gustavo Petro for supposedly meddling in internal issues, after he criticized the police action during the nationwide social mobilizations against Dina Boluarte’s government.
«I want to point out after Petro’s statements I ask him not to stick his red nose in Peru. We are not going to accept foreign terrorism, I want to send my greetings to the Colombian people, but my total repudiation to the guerrilla Gustavo Petro», emphasized Fujimori, according to the mentioned channel.
The Peruvian politician’s words come after the Peruvian Congress’ Foreign Affairs Committee approved on Tuesday a motion declaring the Colombian president ‘persona non grata’ for his statements.
