Moldova’s Prime Minister Dorin Recean has claimed that Russia »lacks sufficient resources» to invade the country and said Moscow cannot achieve this »through military means,» amid rising tensions over the breakaway Transnistria region.

»Russia does not have enough resources for an escalation. It is also clear that Russia cannot invade Moldova by military means», Racean said, adding that the country »has enough potential to cope with a possible escalation in Transnistria».

»The Transnistrian region, like us, seeks peace and stability,» he said, before accusing Russia of »launching a hybrid war» through »propaganda, disinformation and the promotion of certain pro-war narratives.»

Thus, Recean pointed out that the Russian authorities »will not succeed» and stressed that »these waves are more an information war than a real state of affairs», as reported by the Moldovan news portal NewsMaker.

Russia has warned on several occasions about the possibility of »provocations» by Ukraine against the Transnistrian region, while stressing that »any action that poses a threat» to the separatist region will be considered by Moscow as »an attack» against the country.

Recean recently called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the separatist region, after which Moscow »recommended» Chisinau to »be very careful with this». Thus, he recalled that Russia »already has very, very tense relations with Moldova» and said that »this absence of a constructive stance does little to help Moldova».

The region of Transnistria – whose population is mostly Russian and Ukrainian – has gained prominence because of its ties with the Russian government and its important geostrategic position. The Ukrainian authorities have even denounced possible Russian incursions into western Ukraine from Transnistria, while the authorities of the separatist region have demanded that their independence be recognized »peacefully».
