The fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the city of Bajmut (in eastern Ukraine) has come to a virtual standstill due to the enormous attrition suffered by both sides, which would have led Moscow to adopt a new turn in operations to reinforce the positions conquered in the vicinity of the city, according to the latest assessment of the Military Intelligence Department of the British Ministry of Defense.
»Russia’s assault on Bajmut has ended up stalled for the most part due to extreme attrition of Russian forces. Ukraine has also suffered huge casualties during its defense,» according to the ministry’s estimate, published Saturday on its Twitter account.
According to information shuffled by British military intelligence, Russia now appears to be focusing on two positions: Avdiivka, about 50 kilometers south of the city, and the Kremina-Svatove sector, also about 50 kilometers away, this time to the north, where »Moscow aims to stabilize its front line» of combat.
All in all, everything seems to indicate that Russia has returned to »a more defensive operational model» after the »inconclusive results of its attempts to launch a general offensive» since January of this year.
The British Ministry also believes that the Russian offensive in Bajmut has also been hampered by the existing tensions between the Russian Ministry of Defense and the forces of the Wagner mercenary group, which are also fighting in the city and which for months have had serious strategic differences with the Russian military authorities.
