The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, called on Monday from Warsaw, where he is on an official visit, for a new asylum policy in the European Union in the wake of the refugee crisis in Europe due to the war in Ukraine.
Mattarella said during a press conference with his Polish counterpart, Andrzej Duda, that »coordinated» actions of the various countries that make up the EU are necessary to solve the migration crisis.
In this sense, the Italian president recalled that no country can face »alone» such a »transcendental problem». Therefore, he urged the EU to go »beyond» its current regulations to respond quickly to the demands of Ukrainian refugees, according to the newspaper ‘La Reppublica’.
For his part, Duda has expressed that Italy has been »for many years» dealing with »illegal migration» coming from African countries, while Poland now shares a similar path to the Italian one due to the »hybrid attack carried out by the Belarusian regime».
»We are defending the border of the European Union. We expect more support from the institutions to the countries that are fighting against migration», the Polish president has sentenced, as reported by the PAP news agency.
Duda also assured that Russia »cannot win the war», otherwise it »will attack other countries». »We have discussed it with President Mattarella and we agree. We will continue to help Ukraine,» he said, thus urging to continue to offer military aid to Kiev.
Poland is one of the countries that has received the most Ukrainian refugees, as it shares a border with Ukraine, and was harshly criticized for denying equal treatment to wartime migrants regardless of their nationality.
As reported earlier Monday by the Polish Border Guard, more than 300 migrants from Yemen, Pakistan, India, Nigeria and Somalia attempted to cross the border »swimming across the border rivers» over the weekend.
