The Government of the United Kingdom has summoned the Russian ambassador in London to personally convey to him its displeasure at the sentence handed down on Monday against the opponent Vladimir Kara Murza, who also has British nationality, as it considers it to be »politically motivated».
For London, the sentence handed down on Monday by a Moscow court is »contrary to Russia’s human rights obligations», according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The trial was attended, in fact, by representatives of the British Embassy in Russia.
The head of the UK diplomacy, James Cleverly, regretted that the Russian justice has condemned Karza Murza for referring to the invasion of Ukraine in a »courageous» manner as »what it is: a flagrant violation of international law and of the UN Charter».
Russia’s lack of commitment to protect fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression, is alarming», Cleverly stressed, who has already advanced that London will continue to demand the »immediate» release of the dissident and to support him and his family.
Kara Murza, who was already considered by the Russian authorities as a foreign agent, has been convicted of treason, dissemination of false information about the Armed Forces and cooperation with an undesirable organization. The court also banned him from practicing journalism for seven years, although his defense has announced that it will appeal the sentence.
