At least seven people have died and several more have been injured after being run over by an individual who rammed into a group of people waiting at a bus stop in front of a shelter for immigrants in Brownsville, Texas, very close to the Mexican border.
The first warning was received by the authorities at 8:30 a.m. (15:30 Spanish peninsular time) after a Land Rover rammed into the bus stop located next to the Ozanam Center, where an NGO that shelters homeless people and migrants operates.
Seven people were killed at the time and between four and six others were injured, according to a spokesman for the Brownsville Police, Martin Sandoval, in statements to CNN. Sandoval explained that among the dead there are several migrants, although he did not want to specify if it was an intentional crash.
Eyewitnesses held the driver until the arrival of security forces, Sandoval added at a press conference. He received medical attention and has been arrested for reckless driving, although it is »more than likely» that additional charges will be filed.
Sandoval indicated that the individual is of Hispanic origin and said that witnesses stated that the vehicle appeared to have lost control.
The center is prepared to house and feed 200 people while they secure permanent housing, according to its own website.
