The Russian Armed Forces announced Monday that they are developing a new ballistic missile, ‘Zmeevik’, described as a «carrier killer» and equipped with hypersonic combat.

«The ‘Zmeevik’ ballistic missile with hypersonic combat equipment has been under development for a long time. It will be designed to destroy large surface targets, mainly aircraft carriers,» an Army source has assured Russian news agency TASS.

Another source said that this missile could enter service with the Navy’s coastal missile units and, moreover, has characteristics similar to those of Chinese missiles of similar class DF-21D and DF-26, with a range of up to 4,000 kilometers.

This company develops and manufactures hypersonic ‘Zircon’ products (an anti-ship missile for surface ships and submarines), Avangard combat equipment for UR-100N UTTKh and Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, and Bastion coastal missile systems with supersonic ‘Onyx’ missiles.
