The Pope has called on the political leaders present at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is being held in Egypt, for «courage» and determination» to comply «with the path outlined by the Paris agreement», which set the goal of limiting global warming to well below two degrees, preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

During the Angelus this Sunday, Francis recalled that it is one year since the creation of the Laudato SI’ Platform for Action in order to deepen the hopeful but urgent message on the care of Creation.

In this regard, Francis recalled that the platform «promotes ecological conversion and lifestyles consistent» with this initiative, and thanked the 6,000 families, religious institutions and health structures that joined the project to «respond to the cry of the Earth».

The Pope presided a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for the 6th World Day of the Poor and then moved to the Apostolic Palace to pray the Angelus.

Francis once again showed his closeness «with prayer and concrete solidarity» with the «martyred Ukrainians». «Peace is possible, let us not resign ourselves to war,» he has claimed. In addition, he also asked for prayers for the situation in Eritrea at a time when peace talks between the Federal Government of Ethiopia and Tigray have resumed.

During his address, the Pope urged the faithful to «perseverance» which means «building goodness every day».

«To persevere is to remain constant in doing good, especially when the reality around us urges us to do otherwise,» he added.

In this sense, he has pointed out that if one perseveres, there is nothing to fear. «Not even in the sad and ugly events of life, not even in the evil we see around us, because we remain anchored in the good,» he concluded.
