Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian on Monday accused Azerbaijan of shooting civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh, despite the fact that it considers them Azeri citizens.

«Azerbaijan calls Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh ‘our citizens’ and at the same time shoots at them while they are doing agricultural work,» Pashinyan has denounced in a message on his profile on the social network Twitter.

Pashinian has lamented that since two years ago — since November 9, 2020 — three civilians have been killed and 16 wounded, while «54 others have suffered assassination attempts.»

«Is this how the Azeri narrative that the Nagorno Karabakh problem is solved is being implemented?» the Armenian prime minister asks, in the context of the conflict.

Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to a ceasefire on September 15 and in early October agreed to commit to the UN Charter and the 1991 Alma Ata Declaration, through which both countries recognize each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Following this, Pashinian stressed before the Parliament that he expects the peace treaty with Azerbaijan to be signed before the end of the year.

The two countries have been involved in several clashes in recent years over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been the focus of conflict since it decided to secede in 1988 from the Soviet Union-integrated region of Azerbaijan.
