At least three people have been killed and two others injured after an armed student opened fire at the University of Virginia (UVA), located in the U.S. city of Charlottesville.

According to the University Police Department, the main suspect responds to the name of Christopher Darnell Jones, a 22-year-old student of the center and who, after several hours of search, has finally fallen into the hands of the authorities.

According to UVA Police Chief Tim Longo, Jones could face three counts of second-degree murder and three counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to CNN.

University President Jim Ryan said Jones opened fire in the campus parking lot on a bus bringing students back from a cultural field trip.

According to Ryan, the three deceased are players of the University’s soccer team, a team to which Jones was also linked at least until 2018, according to the sports section of the University’s website.

«I am devastated that this type of violence has visited the University of Virginia. This is a dramatic incident for everyone in our community, and we have canceled classes for this Monday,» Ryan moved.

For his part, the governor of Virginia, Glenn Youngkin, has launched in his social networks a message of repulsion to what happened and has confirmed that the State Police has been coordinated at all times with university and local authorities.
