U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Monday expressed «deep concern» over the continued crackdown on protesters by Iranian authorities.

«We are deeply concerned about reports coming out of Iran of mass arrests, sham trials, and now a death sentence for protesters expressing legitimate demands against a government that systematically denies basic dignity and freedom to its people,» the U.S. National Security Advisor explained in a statement.

The United States is working with partners to hold accountable those responsible for human rights violations through sanctions.

«We welcome the new sanctions adopted today by the European Union and the United Kingdom against 29 Iranian individuals and three entities involved in the violent crackdown on protesters,» said Sullivan.

Washington, in addition to expressing its «strong» support for the Iranian people, deplored the recent death sentence against a detainee, as well as reports of torture of political prisoner Hossein Ronagi, who had to be transferred from Evin prison to a hospital in Tehran.

«The eyes of the world are on Iran. The human rights abuses inflicted by its government must not go unpunished. The hundreds of protesters who have already died at the hands of Iranian state authorities deserve justice,» said the U.S. advisor.
